The Material Testing Laboratory (MTL) maintains an extensive and comprehensive gas analysis capability. Highly skilled technical staff operate and maintain dedicated state-of-the-art analytical instrumentation for this purpose. Instrumentation includes bench-top Gas Chromatographs, Quadrapole Mass Spectrometers and Moisture Analyzers. Gas mixture ratios can be determined from 100% down to the 0.1% range. Trace contaminants can be quantitated down to the low ppb level.
Instrumentation
Gas Chromatography
The
MTL utilizes the latest Agilent Technologies® model 6890N
gas chromatagraph (shown at right) equipped with TCD, FID
and PDD detectors. The Pulsed Discharge Detector (PDD) has
a 10x higher sensitivity and response level over conventional
GC detectors and is easily capable of determining gas contaminants
down in the low ppb levels.
Mass Spectrometers
The
MTL also maintains a dual set of bench-top quadrapole mass
spectrometers. The Thermo Onix VG ProLab (shown at left)
is designed around a triple filter quadrapole with a patented
contamination resistant enclosed ion source. This instrument
allows the MTL to achieve fast real-time measurements as well
as the flexibility to measure virtually any gas at atmospheric
pressure in the range of low ppb levels up to 100%.
The
Spectra MiniLab (shown at right) offers the MTL the
capability of having a backup or "confirming" instrument
to the ProLab for those analyses requiring the highest
of confidence levels. The MiniLab offers many of the
same features as the ProLab and is also capable of determining
concentrations of gas mixtures over a wide dynamic range from
ppb to percent levels.
Moisture Analyzers
The
MTL utilizes the EdgeTech DewPrime III Dew Point Hygrometer
(shown at left). This state-of-the-art micro-processor based,
programmable instrument has a wide measurement range (-75
to +100°C) dew point or (0 to 100,000) PPMv. Chilled mirror
technology, automatic correction for mirror contaminants and
NIST certified calibration ensure the highest levels of precision
and accuracy in our data.
