Nuclear Compatibility

Radioactive (Hot) Glove Box Capability:

The MTL has recently constructed a unique Inert Atmosphere (Argon) Glove Box (GB) in LANL's Center for Materials Research (CMR) Building.

  • The GB is a controlled and total separate Materials Balance Area (MBA) within the CMR facility.
  • A staff of 6-7 TSMs and Tecnicians provide over 200 years of combined "hands-on" practical Glove Box experience to run this facility.
  • The MTL can conduct compatibility and materials studies upon a range of radioactive (hot) actinide metals and materials in this GB.
  • It is equipped with a temperature controlled incubator, imaging microscope, manipulative devices and several other solid state/surface analytical tools providing the ability to work with carefully selected chemicals and solvents in contact/reacting with the actinide materials.
  • The MTL can consider undertaking a wide variety of materials and instrumental development for both classified and unclassified research, experimentation, projects and studies within this totally unique "hot" facility.

Cold Glove Box Capability:

  • The MTL has access to a variety of inert/atmospheric glove boxes for both research and analytical purposes.
  • Studies similar to those described above are underway and may be considered.
  • A wide range of standard and uniquely developed analytical instrumentation is available within these facilities. eg IR/UV/Raman etc.
